in reply to Eelco Mulder 🇪🇺 • • •There are, admittedly, many ways to federate, I've made this mistake before. #Fediverse is one example #FidoNet was another, and I'm guessing Office365 too? It is decentralized sharinging which in our case is an open standard.

"..It is not to say that Bluesky is not achieving something useful; Bluesky is not building what is presently a decentralized Twitter, it is building an excellent replacement for Twitter..."
"..Bluesky's main deliverable goal is something else instead: a Twitter replacement, with the possibility of "credible exit"..."
"..Bluesky and ATProto are not meaningfully decentralized, and are not federated either..."

Having hosted a fido node, in a way it was very similar to Fediverse in that you choose what and who you play with, but it also evolved from federated BBS

There are multiple other appviews for Bluesky that people are running, and there have been for quite a while. Competing AppViews for bluesky-lexicons are actually the more interesting part of how atproto is supposed to get to its version of federation. So technically Bluesky has been federated for quite a while now.
The much more interesting question is why none of the other appviews have been publicly open access though
