Fediverse groups are a really useful way to discover posts on lots of interesting topics. They're really simple to use:

1. Follow a group
2. The group's posts will start showing up in your timeline
3. You can post to the group by mentioning it

You can find out more about groups including how to discover, use and create them in this guide:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on…

The guide also answers lots of questions such as how groups differ from hashtags, how they are moderated etc.

p.s. The main advantage Groups have over hashtags is that they federate much more effectively. Every post in a group is federated to everyone who follows that group, no matter which server on.

You can use hashtags and groups simultaneously by including both relevant tags and a relevant group mention in the same post, which lets you get the best of both worlds.

There isnt one list of groups but federated servers have lists of the groups on servers they federate with. Check out a #lemmy (or I think also #gotosocial ) server for a listing.

Is a group something like a "boost bot"? You tag it in a post, it boosts that post to all its followers?

Yes, but the FediGroups.social provider (which is currently the main provider of these kinds of groups) also has moderation tools for screening posts and members, and options for hiding discussions etc.
