Open Source

Honestly, that already says a lot...

Is it better for them to build an open source app and host their meetings on Zoom, a platform familiar to the audience they're hoping to bring, or for them to just not, and for local cooperative banks to all build their own in-house proprietary banking apps with no open source option existing?

I'd really like it if we stopped letting perfect be the enemy of good. My credit union uses an app that's just a webview wrapper for their website. I haven't taken a look at the project but a native app built as an open source community project would be fucking awesome, regardless of whether they host video meetings with zoom or jitsi.

They want their project to succeed. A free software project that dies doesn't actually provide anyone with freedoms; hosting with the more well known and familiar video hosting software when they have no existing audience is the right choice.

Many years ago I worked on a project with some FSF staff who refused to use non-FOSS solutions to coordinate or conduct meetings. While the developers involved where all prolific contributors to open source projects used by millions of people, they were all willing to compromise on some of the tools we use to develop and communicate for "the greater good". The FSF staff weren't willing to make those compromises. At the time I was frustrated by this. As Slack ownership changed, costs increased and policies around what they could do with "our" data evolved, I now have a lot more respect for the FSF staff who are "holding the line".

I assume it's probably a colossal process to uproot and move infrastructure, but personally I see that eventual hassle as being better than the project never getting enough momentum in the first place.

I think once you actually have a project and audience you can make all the most ideal choices but they do come with costs that really matter when you're just starting things

I recognize I'm no expert on running these projects though

I agree. I think fundamentally this is a good project / idea. I am trying to work out where I might contribute - Im a Business Analyst with Web Content experience so my though was to start in Documentation and communication to start. Consequently Im interested in talking to anyone with any #fintech #payments and #corebanking knowledge.

Yeah I am just getting involved in the project. I think that engaging with a full suite of open source products is a good way to show how they can be used by Credit Unions and save a heap of costs...but I also understand this is a process and sometimes you do need to be aware of what your audience uses. Its a process right?

One of the reasons I posted this is I think that it would be great if more people got in and supported the project
