If someone follows me than why should I have to "request" to follow back?

I fully understand why someone wants to gatekeeper their community. But once they've chosen to initiate a connection the reciprocal permission should be automatic.

you because someone is interested in your posts. Doesnโ€™t mean they need to let you join to their community.
Some people are just posting for some friends or family, not for the public.

Fine. Then they can go indulge their clannishness with other folks.

Because to my mind following someone from secrecy is stalker behaviour.

in reply to Matthew Malthouse

sorry but thatโ€™s not the supposed sense of following.
You follow an account because the posts are interesting of you. Where is the sense when there is always a โ€œfollow backโ€, but the posts arenโ€™t interesting for you?

If I post about cooking but are interested in tech a follow tech accounts. Why should they follow me?

Doesnโ€™t make sense to me

I wasn't suggesting an automatic follow back.

Only that when someone follows me the _ability_ to follow back should not be restricted.

Basically: if you follow me you pre-approve me following you too.

Still doesnโ€™t not makes sense.
Why should you see my private posts, just because I follow you?
Sorry but thatโ€™s not the feature of a โ€œfollowโ€.

@P_Lucas
Nothing abou private posts.

It's about the ability to follow public posts.

You're inventing an objection to something I haven't said.

I need to look at how #friendica handles this but I like a distinction between my default private posts to my friends and family and public posts to followers.. but yeah often folllows can be reciprocal ...but sometimes not .. so if i auto followed then id want those people popped into a separate circle..

Yeah .. I understand Mastdon is default public - but for me - My default is that I'm just engaging with my friends and family - Except when I'm engaging in a Lemmy or other Group. My understanding is that #Friendica groups are private - content is only accessible to members - while #lemmy content is public. .
