Wait are you telling me that on Hetzner you can start and stop servers at will and you only get charged for usage?

Since finding out about this yesterday I deleted the first VPS and created a brand new one with Docker pre-installed. Changed SSH ports, bulked up security, turned on the firewall... and if I'm adventurous enough I may attempt to install Ghost this afternoon 😅

I had to pre-pay 20 Euros to verify my identity on Hetzner and my usage so far has been 1.36€.

Send help this #selfhosting stuff is addictive 😂

I just hope you don't also catch the "I really need this domain name" virus. I still think that all of my 25 domains will someday change the world for the better! :)

oh I've had that bug for a while and went up to 15 domain names... thankfully I'm in recovery and scaling back now. I think I went "down" to 10-12 (need to check, LOL)

Interesting. I thought we were charged regardless -- I was sure I had read it somewhere when I setup my first server a few years ago.

I've just checked the docs, and it says:

Do you bill servers that are off?
Yes. Until you, the customer, delete your servers, we will bill you for them, regardless of their state.

Maybe they have a new policy 🤔

oh I can see the usage that my deleted servers racked up... it's all in the dashboard. So yes, I will be charged for them at the end of the month, but used them so little that the expense is negligible

Yeah, feel that too... I currently have a list where I write down every service I may want to #selfhost and it has at the very least 50 entries, many of them just to try them out (thought that is a valid excuse in the realm of homelabbing and selfhosting).

haha I hear you.

My husband yesterday said: "did you know that Pocket is dead?" and I replied "yes, did you know that you can self-host similar services?" 😅

Apologies if mansplaining but that's the great thing with cloud ..virual hardware can be rented out by the hour, services can be built on top (often using opensource software) and then you can charge marginal costs on anybasis you want. Then you can alter them slightly and make them unique to your cloud service and lock people in so they can't leave - Even though the underlying stuff (cpus, storage, power, connectivity) are all generic. That's how AWS and Azure are the most profitable bits of their business. - Then again you can self host on your own hardware at home, use your own internet connection and wifi to your neighbours, maybe chuck in a battery and some solar panels and hey presto ..
