Due to the tyrannical U.S. president suspending the nearly 100 year old de minimis exemption (no import duty for up to $800 in goods), my new little Canadian Etsy shop has no choice but to SUSPEND SHIPPING TO THE U.S. as of August 25th.

Devastating.

If you’re in :cangoose: Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ and want to support me β€” drop by my shop and use promo code FXCKTRUMP25 for $5 off any order over $25 or spend $50 for a flat 25% off, no promo code needed. 🀘🏻#BuyCanadian #Etsy #SmallBusiness #FuckTrump

That exemption (and the #internationalpostalunion treaties that set international postage rates to favour developing countries) have been so abused I actually have to agree that they needed to be reformed. Most countries don't offer such a large #deminimus value. (I think its Β£15 in the #uk and $Nzd200 in #NewZealand) - I'm not clear if the #us has dropped it to zero (if that is so its nuts - something like $40 is probably in the right ballpark) or what but it had to change - I'm sorry that you are so effected - but really the only way around it would be for #canada and the #usa to have a common customs area, aligned tarrifs and approach to sales tax.

@abeorch Yeah, for importing into Canada it's only shipments up to C$20 value that are tax/tariff free, $100 if it is sent as a gift (directly from an individual, not shipped by a retailer). Somewhere in between the two would be reasonable. For small shipments, the extra fees collected by postal/courier companies to act as a customs broker often end up much larger than the official taxes & fees.

@britt I hope you're able to get a few more orders out to the US before the change comes in. But at the same time, the main advantage of 3D printing, IMO, is that things can be manufactured on demand close to the end user, so I hope you can connect with enough Canadian customers to make that work!

Yeah .. gosh i am always amazed by people's completely reasonable replies when you say something that might sound like disagreement or might indicate you agree with the actions of someone they might dislike. - Its so nice to get them and restores a bit of faith in the world.

The #eu or at least #spain doesnt happen to have such an exemption and the number of christmas presents empounded and returned to the uk since #brexit...

EU eliminated deminimus for VAT/IVA in 2021. looks like they are doing the same for customs twobirds.com/en/insights/2024/…
