Starting with Nextcloud can be as easy as 1-2-3! 🎯

Do you remember when you first made the switch?

My most successful use of Nextcloud has been selfhosted using #yunhost @YunoHost :disability_flag: . I'm lookiing forward to trying it out with @Co-op Cloud soon

I used OwnCloud befor so that should be in 2016 when you forked.
I mainly used it for Calendar and Contact Sync and sharing some docs with other people.
Meanwhile i am running 4 Nextcloud Instances for different NGOs and a private one just for the family.

@abeorch not that much, there is a grist spreadsheet and a collabora server to integrate in NC. That's all we need atm.

I want to retrieve my data from US clouds. Since then, I've been struggling with the setup of your software to get it working on my iPhone, iPad, MacOS, and especially on my Linux PC. With moderate success. However, I'm reading up on it 💪🏻

EDIT: Oh Joined as a user and set it up myself.

When you say you joined as a user - where have you setup a Nextcloud account?
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch I'm currently working (late shift). I'll take a few screenshots tomorrow morning and post them here. Thank you very much for your interest 🥰 (Translated from German with DeepL)
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch I need a little more time to work out the details. I had to go to the doctor this morning and have to go back for the late shift soon. Stay tuned... 🥰
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch So here are the informations (finally). Sorry, I only have everything in German.
All the error messages I'm posting here are the same on all devices! #iPhone, #iPad, and #Linux. Only the MacOS version starts up without any problems (which is why my login details are correct). I'm responding in several steps because the number of characters is limited here on @Mastodon ( @ivory) 🙄
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch
First step: I start the app, get a security warning, and click on “Log in.”
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch
Second step: I enter my correct login details and click on “Log in.”
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch
Step three: I get a message: Encryption.App is activated, but the keys are not initialized. Please log out and log back in (when I do this, the error message remains the same).
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch
Step four: I get the message “Access denied. status token missing” And in these four messages, I go round in circles on all devices, instances, and operating systems. I can only log in correctly in the MacOS version. Linux, iPhone, and iPad strictly refuse to do so, and I have no idea what the Nextcloud app wants from me, since I am doing what it says. The internet doesn't offer much help. In forums, I am (as so often) simply dismissed with “use the search function.”

Hmm I'm no expert but could this be because part of the authentication process uses your browser to request the authenication with the nextcloud server and then pass back the authorisation - Do you have some privacy focused restrictions on your browser, what browser are you using?
in reply to abeorch

Are you ok logging into the web interface of your Nextcloud account?
in reply to abeorch

When I log into the Nextcloud app on my Mac, it happens via a browser and I am then in the web interface. That works. The MacOS app from Nextcloud also works perfectly. The iOS and iPadOS versions do not work. There is no browser window for logging in. With the Linux desktop app, when I log in, I am taken back to the (Firefox) browser, where neither the web interface nor the Linux app works.

@RuCage @abeorch that's unusual. We'd really recommend visiting the Nextcloud Community forum, but we see you already mentioned getting no luck there. In that case, you can consider submitting an issue here: github.com/nextcloud/server
Or the client repos:
github.com/nextcloud/ios
github.com/nextcloud/android
github.com/nextcloud/desktop
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch Only the MacOS browser and MacOS desktop app work, none of the others, even though the login details are always the same, including the Cloudshare address.
in reply to abeorch

@abeorch Ich glaube nicht. Der Browser in MacOS funktioniert ja. Der selbe Prozess auf Linux nicht (Firefox Standard-Einstellungen)

@abeorch
...and I've been actively trying to fix this error for about six months now. It's important to me that these apps work properly on my iPhone and Linux, as I no longer want to use a US cloud and my Linux otherwise has no cloud connection in the EU.

Well, we used ownCloud on a server we controlled within an organisation I was on of the Sys Admins.

Later I did get myself a free Nextcloud account, but though it's connected on a NAS, it's not actively used.
I have a Stack account, which is a fork.

Several months ago I tested a Nextcloud environment, turned out I was only expected to do some user work and not test it.
I did give some feedback on the apps, and also again to not syncing temp files! Lock files etc. need to be synced!

In 2018 I put eelo (now called /e/OS) on my aging Nexus 5. It uses Murena, which is based on Nextcloud

We love all the stories! Thanks everyone for sharing your Nextcloud journeys. And shoutout to those persistent of you who managed to pull off more tricky setups.

Of course, we always work on our solutions and tooling to make self-hosting Nextcloud even easier to less experienced people. So your feedback is very welcome :)
